Review: When I saw that Doug Liman was directing and McQuarrie penning, I was interested. I liked Limans first Bourne film over Greengrass-directed nauseating shaky-cam sequels. McQuarrie is a wonderful screenwriter, and these two seemed like a perfect pair.I got what I hoped: a movie that doesnt treat me like a 10-year old. Edge of tomorrow is smart, entertaining, exciting and fun. Its an original movie as well, not a sequel or a remake (although I hear it might be inspired by a novel or graphic novel).Tom Cruise - who plays a slightly different character than usually - is good, he always brings his best. He cares about his projects and demands to do as much stunts as possible. His passion can be seen here too and he is again a joy to watch, but this isnt a movie for Cruise to carry. Liman and McQuarrie carry this movie with smart pacing, transitions and that certain magic good filmmakers seem to be able to harness at will.Emily Blunt isnt a useless sidekick, but a strong and likable character. Not annoyingly strong on the surface like some feminist ball-busting fantasy, but a real character and deserves every minute of her screen time. Bill Paxton was fun to see as a hard-ass sergeant, and Brendan Gleeson was good as well - even though his screen time is limited. All the main actors work well together, if a scene is shared.The movie flows in an interesting way and it likes to surprise you. Im not talking about forced twists, Im talking about that special situation where you dont know what happens next. Ive missed that feeling. I didnt have to pretend to care about the movie, I was interested in every minute of it. This happens rarely. And when it ends, youre satisfied. No setting up sequels, no ambiguous crap, just a solid, fitting ending.Unlike Cruises last sci-fi film Oblivion, this is definitely an action movie. At first glance it may look like a generic sci-fi action film - and granted, sometimes (suits, aliens) it does - but theres enough personality of its own. Action looks good and the camera doesnt shake around senselessly. Also, the action never goes into that overblown mode where your senses get tired and you just dont care anymore. Well done.Edge of tomorrow is a thoroughly entertaining film. Its just a summer movie, but its a smart, fun and exciting summer movie. You dont have to make excuses for its shortcomings to enjoy it. Its quality filmmaking and certainly a positive surprise.9/10, will buy on blu-ray. I recommend this to everyone. Avoid as much spoilers as you can.

Review: At first when i read about this movie I was quite interested but the name Takashi Shimizu immediately killed my interest. However since there was nothing good to watch I thought just give it a try if its boring i can turn it off. Considering Takashi Shimizu movies are poorly executed this is his most decent flick to date as stated by a previous reviewer. Its watchable, decent storyline but too rushed. If only the ending wasnt so rushed it would be a very decent horror flick.Overall it is watchable not slow like most movies directed by Japanese directors. Just dont expect anything from this movie.

Review: What I thought worked in Luhrmanns Gatsby:I thought DiCaprio was a better Gatsby than Robert Redford (Redford was too old and underplayed the character). I thought DiCaprio understood a complex character and was adequately convincing.I Love Carey Mulligan and thought she was mostly convincing as Daisy.I liked it when the story stuck to Fitzgerald - which was about 75% of the time. (having just read the book again in the last 6 months, I recognized most of the Dialogue as true to the book)I thought the Costume Design was exquisite. Catherine Martin has done costume work for all of Baz Luhrmanns films and won an academy award for costumes in Moulin Rouge!(as well as being nominated for Romeo + Juliet and Australia. Her work is again superior here - one of the real strengths of the film...I thought the 2nd half of the movie was much better than the 1st. While I generally did not like the soundtrack I loved that Gershwins Rhapsody in Blue snuck in there in the first scenes in Manhattan.The Valley of Ashes and the Dr. T.J. Eckleburg, Occulist sign are really well done - but sadly, the scenes there are so rushed and so downplayed as to prevent that location from being the symbol of death Fitzgerald intended it to be...The scene in Nicks house where Daisy is invited to tea and re-meets Gatsby.What I did not like about it:Every scene with Tobey Maguire in it. His Nick Carraway is too much of Gatsbys lapdog. He is too wide-eyed throughout the story. By the end of the movie I was praying for George Wilson to shoot him.Luhrmanns story telling device (Nick Carraway in a Sanitarium telling the story to a Doctor who encourages him to write it) - Really Baz Luhrman, youre gonna improve on Fitzgerald?Luhrmanns other story telling device: the words on the screen. Yuck!The Art-direction. Everything was too over-the-top and garish. Gatsbys house looks like a Disney creation. One might argue that this is okay because the new-rich are often garish. But part of the character that Fitzgerald wrote was that he was convincing as a monied man. The sound-track of the 1st half of the movie. Typically Luhrmann; and I have loved it in other contexts. It did not work in Gatsby. After the last party scene, the soundtrack was much better and the rest of the movie felt like Fitzgerald to me.BTW - I generally am a fan of Baz Luhrmanns work. I loved Romeo + Juliet while it was being panned by professional critics. And I found Moulin Rouge! delightful..Moet Champaign (which apparently bought huge stock in this movie)Joel Edgerton (nuff said)The over-the-top garishness of the production is so distracting that the great social themes of the day are almost completely lost. They are so subtle int he book and they must be subtly depicted in cinema. They are so subtle as to be almost entirely lost in this production. When I first read the book I felt such sympathy for almost every character (except Tom Buchanan). I did not really care about the characters in this movie at all.That Damn green light - much too much. It is a powerful but subtle symbol in the book. Let a symbol be a symbol without having to constantly refer to it and without hitting your audience over the head with it.Because I did not think it entirely sucked, I will give it a 5. Adolescent girls will disagree with me (even as they are failing their Gatsby finals because they based it this mediocre retelling of the story). Fitzgerald and Gatsby fans will think I am being too generousNote to Hollywood - If you are going to make a movie based on a great work of literature, respect and humbly submit to that greatness, and make a movie worthy of the original.

Review: If youre into crime movies and dialogue-based movies with a firm stir of action, go watch this. But dont forget: what you see is what you get. If you dont like the atmosphere of the trailer, you wont like the movie. If you do, dont hesitate. Loved Bullhead of Roskam as well, but its a total different genre of movie, although ita also an intense crime-picture. I think this is a film that concentrates a lot of fresh Hollywood-talent, with a great amount of quality. We should definitely keep an eye on Hardy, Schoenaerts, Naomie. And of course, if you like Gandolfini/The Sopranos, you shouldnt even be reading this because it was his last movie and hes great in it!

Review: I went to see the movie because the review of the movie said that it would change what you thought about film making. This would be true if youve never seen a movie before, but that is not the case.Not to say that the movie is not good. It acts as a sort of one man play starring Tom Hardy as Ivan Locke, a man who made a mistake in his past that threatens to unwrap his perfect life when he tries to do the right thing. The movie totally relies on the actor playing the role and Tom steps up to the challenge nicely.But Ive seen this kind of one man play with Buried starring Ryan Reynolds and Brake starring Stephen Dorff. I can even mention other movies like 127hours or Phone booth that have a similar concept.What makes Locke different is that the pressure of life and death is not there. In those movies the leading (and only) men were threaten with the proposal of death, While in this movie, Ivan Lockes way of Life is threaten with change, and its this change in the concept that made the movie Quiet and low key, but the filmmakers were still able to make if fast pasted and kinetic (having it take place in a Car going down the highway helps).The movie had the same pressure of a ticking clock about to explode and the lead character attempting to talk himself out of the situation, but the filmmaker does not force the tension or thrills on you. Ivan Lockes situation is very down to earth and every day to day. Watching him attempt to deal with this situation could have come off boring after a half hour if not for Tom Hardy showing his mental acting chops (versus how physically intimidating he seemed as Bane in Dark Knight Rises, hes a small man in real life).Though the movie was good to watch I could have gotten the same effect streaming it at home on Netflix. Recommend you do the same.

Review: This is not like all the previous Superman movies. This is not Smallville. This is not the sequel of Superman Returns. This is Man of Steel! This movie is awesome.I am not a big fan of Superman but this is the best Superman movie Ive ever seen. (Christopher Reeves version is also good, but this Man of Steel is better. And.. the Brandon Rouths version? Naaaaah...) The plot is really structural. Not so many flashbacks, so you wont get confused. The whole storyline is just really simple. It told the very beginning of Superman and then, yeah, his adulthood.The special effects here, I think it is as awesome as Marvels Avengers. Yeah, alien and superheroes, what do you expect? Battle scenes are good, I can feel Zack Snyder 300 sensation in here.Henry Cavill succeeded bringing a whole new version of Superman to the big screen. He wiped out all our knowledge of the previous Superman movies and replaced it with a darker version of Superman (Nolans kinda darkness) This movie is enjoyable. See? Theres still hope for DC Comics superheroes movies.
